When you do your sports journalism qualifications one of the first things you learn is to stay impartial and balanced.
Well fuck that... I want Nicolas Colsaerts to win in Dubai because he’s an absolute boy.
Going into the final round of the European Tour finale DP World Tour Championship he is one shot off the Victor Dubuisson’s lead and playing in the final group.
Since his Ryder Cup appearance in 2012 at Medinah where he out-birdied and generally blitzed Tiger in the fourballs the Belgian has suffered from inconsistent form.
But all the while he has been chilled out and remained a nice and down to earth guy.
From smashing golf balls through his hotel room balcony at 3am to smashing 20 cigarettes in his practise round to his love of what he would call ‘proper’ house music, he’s someone you know you could sit in a pub and have a proper good time with.
Yes Fitz, Tyrrell Hatton and another dude Rafa Cabrera-Bello are in the hunt too but come tomorrow and the final round we’ll be rooting for the main man Coels…
And for such a popular man on tour nobody would begrudge ‘The Dude’ his first win since 2012.
In other less important news someone is going to have to go nuts tomorrow for Stenson not to win the Race to Dubai.
Noren is six back but has a load of guys between him and the lead, Willett shot 76 and is getting lapped whilst Rory was never really going to do anything, especially after an opening 75.
Anyway, who actually cares about that? Like most of these 72-hole events it only really gets good come Sunday, so come on Coels!!!
Have a read of our fantastic exclusive with Colsaerts a while back here where he talks about getting 'shitfaced', house music in dingy clubs in Belgium and just generally speaks honestly... a rarity amongst golfers!
